Open Mobility Foundation Board Engagement

The Open Mobility Foundation sought to strengthen the effectiveness of its Board of Directors by better aligning governance structures, roles, and culture with its strategic goals. While the board was actively engaged, there was a need for clearer decision-making processes, shared expectations, and stronger cohesion across individual and collective responsibilities. Addressing these issues required an objective assessment of how the board functioned in practice, as well as a clear path forward to support more productive governance and sustained engagement.

Method

Cityfi conducted a landscape assessment of the board’s existing governance model, culture, and operating practices through document review and in-depth stakeholder engagement. This included reviewing materials related to board structure, workflows, roles, and past goal-setting efforts, as well as interviewing each board member, the board chair, and the Executive Director to identify strengths, gaps, and barriers to effectiveness. Building on these findings, Cityfi developed a set of tailored recommendations addressing board structure, governance model, roles and responsibilities, and engagement strategies. The team also provided project management support to ensure clear communication, coordination, and alignment throughout the engagement.

The project resulted in a comprehensive recommendations report outlining a clearer governance framework, defined expectations for board and individual member contributions, and concrete commitments for the upcoming year. As part of this work, Cityfi also developed the Board’s initial Board Charter. Cityfi presented the recommendations to the Board of Directors and supported leadership in planning for implementation and next steps. As a result, the organization gained a practical roadmap for improving board effectiveness, strengthening engagement, and positioning the board to more effectively advance its strategic priorities.
